The movie to be discussed in this essay is Glory. The main characters include: Robert Gould Shaw and Tripp . The theme of the movie is of the first Black regiment in any United States Military and the trials and tribulations that the officers and the enlisted men of the 54th Brigade of Massachusetts endure. Shaw and Tripp were different in social class, background, and upbringing, but they shared a desire for freedom of all people regardless of color or social status.
TRIPP.
Tripp is a slave that has run away from his master in Tennessee and managed to make it to the North. Tripp is a very independent person and with his new freedom believes in getting straight to the point. He hears of a new military regiment starting for Negroes and decides to join. He isn't fighting for the Union, but for himself and for self-righteousness. .
He and Colonel Shaw do not see eye to eye on almost everything, and actually don't really like each other in any way. Tripp is a very angry man and it reflects in everything he does and how he interacts with others. This causes him problems within the troop, as they have to work with each other and trust each other. He believes that the blacks from the north are really white, as he calls one of them "snowflake." He tells him that he is white in talk, white in thought and only black in color. And even though some of what he is saying may have some validity, he doesn't understand where the other man is coming from. .
In a conversation with Colonel Shaw, Tripp says that he does not believe that things will really change much after the war. He doesn't think the slaves will be free and also thinks that afterward the war slaves will have nothing to go home to. He also states that he doesn't think anyone will really win the war. When Colonel Shaw commends him on his dedication and what he has done for the brigade, he offers to let Tripp carry the flag into the next battle. Tripp declines and says that he doesn't want to carry it, as he wouldn't be able to carry a gun.
