This quotation reputed by Claudius shows his selfish behaviour of how he was somewhat ordering Hamlet to quit mourning and forget his father's death when not even two months had passed since his father died. It is clear by the cold behaviour of Hamlet in the scene that he had not accepted him as a father and was very furious to his mother for not being loyal to his father and marrying his uncle which was against the customs of that society and was considered to be a sin in those medieval times . This was shown when Hamlet talking to himself about the unforgivable act of his mother said "She married: " O, most wicked speed, to post With such dexterity to incestuous sheets!- (Act I, scene ii, lines 156-157). Claudius's motive behind this advice was to win the queen's and Hamlet's trust. For this reason he manipulated the real feelings of his heart for Hamlet in front of the queen who was observing the rude and cold behaviour of her son towards Claudius. But still, Claudius tried to minimize the sorrow and grief of Hamlet's father's death . He also tried to make Hamlet feel better by saying to hamlet that "You are the most immediate to our throne- (Act 1, scene ii, line 109) and this way urged him to accept him as his father. Claudius thought that this step of his might make Hamlet happy and make Hamlet start respecting and trusting him as a father. The main agenda however, was that he wanted Hamlet to quit sorrowing on his father's death and behave normally. In Denmark at that time, kings were usually elected by the people. So if the people observe that the person named to be the next king by the present king is not responsible enough to rule, they may elect someone else to be the king for the betterment of Denmark. So keeping this in mind, Claudius named Hamlet to be his successor so that he may stop behaving absurdly and act more responsible and mature in front of the people.
