Rock and Roll

New families started up all around the nation causing a growth spurt in population known as the "Baby Boom" and many of these families moved to communities on the outskirts of the cities known as suburbs. These suburbs consisted of a house for each family complete with a yard, driveway and garage, as well as clean air and plenty of space for the kids to play. It was in other words the perfect place to raise a family. The design of the suburbs themselves promoted a lot of sameness and "conformity". For example in one of the earliest suburbs, Levittown NY, the house's were massed produced and virtually identical, tree's were planted every 28 feet and most of the streets were virtually identical. This same design was used on many other of the early suburban projects of the time. But on the other hand the suburbs promoted "togetherness" especially within the family and the neighbors. The family was the nexus of most activities. But at the same time, teenagers were able to become more independent because of the post-war prosperity and ease of the new life. .
Before the end of World War Two, teens had o take life more seriously, especially during the Great Depression and World War Two. Many teens were never able to finish high school because they had to go out to work to help give to the family, and of course with being busy with school (if still attended) and than their jobs, teenagers were not able to enjoy the same pastimes or social life they were able to enjoy later on. Teens had little spending power and influence. Music was controlled by the parents most of the time and limited to the radio at home or the occasional record purchase. With the end of the war and with the with spread prosperity, teens no longer had to work after school and had more free time to form peer bonds with one another, parents had enough money to give out allowances making jobs sometimes unnecessary.
