I think the main character in this story is quite interesting and that some of the things that he does could be quite typical of us guys at some point in our life, usually when we are younger. I felt a connection at first when he was talking about how on some days the city where he lived woke in the morning with a strange look and those same familiar things seem as if they where being seen with different eyes. I grew up in a big city where I felt what he is talking about every once in a while, it seems as if the city had a personality and exhibited different moods. But when I think about it, it's either one of two things, either that that we perceive places differently depending on the things that are going on in our heads at the time, or that sometimes we are oblivious to changes in our surroundings, and on those days that when we finally take the time to notice the changes, this gives us a new perspective on how we relate to people and places.
I think those days when he noticed the strange look of the city, where the the few days when he, without realizing opened his eyes and came out of the darkness to see the city and the people with a more positive attitude and without the guiltiness and fear that characterized him. But even all that peace and calmness of these days would leave him with a bitter-taste that was probably the cause of all the things that he held inside of him, inside his heart of stone. .
There's no doubt that this guy has some big serious issues; he goes around analyzing people and envying how they can be so open and friendly without putting up all the walls that he puts when it comes to relating to others. The saddest thing about this is that he is very aware of it and admits his stupidity as he calls it; he feels like all he has "ever done is to suffer from a vast, inept lack of confidence."" (Pavese) And he reacts against other people, when he comes into contact with them, with stupid cruelty.
