Everyday it seem like we all get in an argument about gender. Which sex has more power? How should each sex be portrayed. These are questions that can be found in many arguments today, whether between classmates, couples, brothers and sisters. These could be displayed on television, newspapers, books and radios. One I see is from the story of Rip Van Winkle, between Rip and Dame Van Winkle. This "battle of the sexes" is an endless topic. This issue has last for some many years because we were all born into think about it. It is just a way of life for us now.
In television today, "battle of sexes" is the highlight of almost every T.V shows. Whether the show is a drama, horror, or a comedy; they all have gender issues. Most can seen in comedy. If you spend a weeknight watching comedy shows on T.V, you will notice that the wife is being portray as the "center", the one that takes care the kids, the one that cleans the house and just the typical wife with a twist to it. On the other hand, you will also see that the man is portray as messy, insensitive, and most of the time being nagged by the wife. Just like the shows, in the story Dame is constantly nagging Rip because he is such a "typical" male which are messy and lazy. As a viewer or reader, you learn from these and apply them to real life. Through out the year, the prospective of what a male and female have change. In earlier television shows, like I Love Lucy, Lucy is portray as the traditional housewife that stays home and wait for the husband to come home. Now a day, television shows that relate to our generation, like Married With Children; then wife in that show is nothing like that of the traditional house wife. She does cook, doesn't clean, just the careless type. She's more like that independent person that does want ever she wants whenever she wants. She breaks the barrier of how women are portrayed.
