Abortion is an extremely controversial issue among many people of our society. There are many different views on how abortion should be regulated, if it should be regulated at all. After viewing the many sides to this debate, I plan to demonstrate how this procedure is a necessary act which should remain legal. There are many arguments which need to be considered in order for one to take a clear, confident position on the subject. The extreme "pro-life" argument is that an embryo, a human life, is innocent and worthy of protection, from the moment of conception and, possesses a right to life that should be respected. Therefore, abortion under any circumstance is the killing of an innocent person, murder, and thus wrong. The extreme "pro-choice" argument is that a woman's right to control her own body always outweighs any right claimed for the fetus, and that abortion is acceptable under any circumstance. Yet, there is also a middle ground between these arguments which focuses on the morality that abortion is wrong, yet in some cases it may be necessary. This middle grown includes the exceptions that would allow this procedure to take place if it was illegal. I will focus on why abortion should be legal in every case because women should have the right and the availability to control their own bodies, and the decision in terms of if she will be able to care for the child.
The law today permits abortion in the United States because of the laws enforced after the Roe v. Wade Case. These laws were necessary in making abortion legal for many reasons. Years ago, the Roe V. Wade case permitted abortion, stating that a woman had the right to protect herself and her privacy in deciding to have an abortion. Many changes have been made since this case which demonstrates that there is a regulation of abortion in order for the procedure to take place under justifiable circumstances. The United States Supreme Court has issued thirty abortion related rulings, including several that have supported the constitutionality of state laws that regulate and limit abortion.
