Limit democracy

Constitution in the beginning limited democracy and individual liberty. Government/Politics text book leaves this question of whether the U.S. constitution created a system of government that truly respects liberty. There are at least three evidences that support the question. The three evidences are the Electoral College, the voting of Senators and the issue of slavery/women.
The Electoral College is an issue that always comes up in almost every election year. When people vote for the president they actually are voting for the electors who in turn vote for the president. For example, let's say that Pennsylvania went to the Democratic Party; therefore all of Pennsylvania's electors will be expected to vote for the candidate in the Democratic Party. Rarely, I mean very rarely, does an elector vote for the other party but it could happen. The Electoral College limits democracy because people do not vote for the president directly; instead they vote through the electors.
When the Constitution was created it stated that senators would be elected by the state legislators. This once again limits democracy because people cannot vote for senators directly. It is almost similar to the Electoral College, because the people have to vote for their state legislators who than vote for the senators. This could mean that a senator disliked by the people of that state could get voted into the Senate. Than in 1913 it all changed when the states ratified Amendment 17 which stated that senators will now be elected by the people directly.
The third evidence has to deal with slavery and women. The issue with slavery was not mentioned in the constitution at all. African-Americans were not allowed to vote or own any property. If they ran away, they had to be returned to their masters. African-Americans were not even regarded in state population when it came time to vote for state representatives. Women had a little ore liberties than the African-Americans did.
