In A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, there are four young lovers with a complicated problem. Egeus wishes for his daughter to marry Demetrius, but she and Lysander are in love. Shakespeare uses symbolism to explore the confusion that love creates. Such as; The forest, dreams and the "love juice".
The forest symbolizes confusion that is created by love. The four lovers keep changing their minds about who they love while they are in the forest. For example, Lysander says "Content with Hermia? No, I do repent the tedious minutes I with her have spent, not Hermia but Helena I love". This shows that Lysander does not love Hermia, he now loves Helena. The fairies also make confusion in the forest, For instance Robin puts the "love juice" on Lysander's and Demetrius" eyes. When Robin put the "love juice" on them they do not love Hermia anymore and they both loved Helena. While in the forest the fairies practice the play that they are going to perform for the lovers. The play causes Bottom to act like an "ass" which then a spell is cast on him and he gets his head turned into "that of an ass". For example Bottom says "methought I was- there is no man can tell what.
