The Toolbox Approach

That may lead to the attitude that improvement is necessary only when something is offered and not at all times. How can law enforcement leaders motivate employees at all times and not only when there is a dangling carrot?.
The FISH theory of motivation enables leaders and employees to attend, choose their attitude, play and be there each day. (Lundin, Paul, and Christensen, 2000) This theory is an excellent tool to use when shaping a culture of higher achievement because it offers leaders and employees a way to achieve while enjoying themselves or having fun at the same time. Based on the FISH theory each person has a choice what his or her attitude will be during a given day. By choosing a positive attitude a leader is more likely to have employees who will choose a positive attitude. When change is needed within an organization it is the leaders who are effective motivators that will be most effective in implanting change. .
Why if a leader has a positive attitude are the employees far more likely to have a positive attitude? The law enforcement leader is employing a "shaping" tool called modeling. A leader must be ready and willing to do what they ask of their staff. Law enforcement leaders must strive to use this "shaping" tool because employees are more likely to reach their potential by watching the example that the leader has set than following policy that has been dictated to them. In this case the old saying "actions speak louder than words" ring true. A leader realizes that everything he or she does is going to be looked at under a microscope and therefore a leader is very careful that his or her actions communicate, in a nonverbal way, a positive, caring, and productive message.
An even more effective way of leading through example is through coaching. Two types of coaching are effective for law enforcement leaders those being: performance and cognitive coaching.
