Lost Hope is like a contagious disease in the novel Of Mice and Men. Many of the characters have lost their hopes and dreams. Lennie, George, Candy, Curley and his wife all had hope at one point but lost it or a little piece of it as time progressed. The main source of their lost dreams is Lennie, not because he means to do it, but because his brain does not function normally and he does not realize the unbearable strength his hands have. .
One of the character who lost his dreams is George Milton, after his best friend Lennie who was supposed to help their dream come to reality is killed. The loss of his companion resulted in the loss of his hopes and dreams. His dream was to "have a little house and a couple of acres an" a cow and some pigs and live off the fatta the land." Lennie, even though he did not know, he killed many peoples dreams. Firstly, by killing Curley's wife resulted in the loss of her fulfilling her dreams and Curley living his. Lennie would have died a painful death if George did not kill Lennie himself, and because George killed his best friend he will never be able to live the dream that Lennie and him once shared. Candy's hopes slowly faded away once he realized he had no place to go now because Lennie's mistake.
