Personality Disorders

Personality disorders are something that not many people are familiar with. They affect different people in different ways. The side affect that one person has may be different from the side affect that someone else is experiencing. There is a large amount of disorders in the world. Three that I have chosen are Catatonic Schizophrenia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Mental Retardation. .
Catatonic Schizophrenia is a disorder that causes people to have unusual habits or mannerisms. A person that is experiencing this may go through a lot of strange phases. One of these strange phases is that they may sit or stand in unusual positions. An example of this would be a person that stood on one leg for a large amount of time. Also, a patient may allow someone to move their arms or legs into different positions with out saying anything. This is called waxy flexibility. People with catatonic schizophrenia do not mind waxy flexibility. One common symptom is to sit without moving for long periods of time. All of these symptoms are usually seen when studying a catatonic schizophrenic. Although they may not demonstrate all of these, at least one will be used. .
In the movie Girl Interrupted one of the characters is a catatonic schizophrenic. Her name is not used and nobody talks to her but they do tend to pick on her. They show a scene where all the patients are in the lounge and an old lady is just sitting on a chair starring straight ahead. One of the other patients blows cigarette smoke into the lady's face and she doesn't move. This movie accurately displays catatonic schizophrenia because one symptom is for a person to sit without moving for long periods of time. That is exactly what the old lady did. .
Another personality disorder is obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). A person diagnosed with this is repetitive in their behavior. An example is a person that is afraid of germs washing their hands over and over again.
