Of Mice and Men - Suffering

The time of the Great Depression has caused sadness and suffering of individuals of different classes, especially the lower class. Some, like Crooks, were always discriminated against and just wanted to belong somewhere; some, like George and Lennie, had a dream and lived just for the dream; some, like Curley's wife, wanted to be something, someone important. .
Lennie has suffered in the novel Of Mice and Men, because of his simplicity. He was always afraid to say something stupid, because if he did George would not let him "tend the rabbits". But Lennie also was suffering before he and George though of getting a farm. George used to play practical jokes on Lennie because Lennie was too simple to understand or get angry. .
"I used to play jokes on "im "cause he was too dumb to take care of "imself. Tell you what made me stop that. One day a bunch of guys was standin" around up on the Sacramento River. I was feelin" pretty smart. I turns to Lennie and says: "Jump in." An" he jumps. Couldn't swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him. An" he was so damn nice to me for pullin" him out. Clean forgot I told him to jump in.".
Even though George always complains how he would be better off without Lennie, he still could not be happy without Lennie by his side. Lennie is always in trouble, because of his simplicity, basically he is like a child, and George is like his big brother. They have been traveling together ever since they left their home town, and George has grown quite attached to Lennie. Together they were going to get a farm, and some animals. So when Lennie gets into trouble one last time George knows that they, now, will never get that piece of land, and the only thing George can do is make it easier on Lennie: "We gonna get a little place. We"ll have a cow. An" we"ll have maybe a pig an" chickens an" down the flat we"ll have a place for alfalfa for the rabbits. An" you get to tend the rabbits.
