The scientific method and the philosophical approach are two methods of analysis used in psychology. The scientific method, a method that was embraced by psychology in the nineteenth century, deals with empiricism, or that knowledge should be acquired through observation. Using the scientific method, one has a focused way of finding a definite answer. However, there are certain steps that one must follow and they are: define a problem formulate a hypothesis, gather data, and interpret the results for a conclusion. This method involves research and experiments to test ideas, and will not settle for ones that sound believable. This leads to only one answer being right, while all others are wrong. In life however, things are not always this simple. .
The philosophical approach Is similar in that observation is also used to obtain knowledge or ideas and help with a problem. On the other hand the philosophical approach is different in that it is not an exact method, and is subjective, meaning different for every person. Rather than using a set method, psychologists using the philosophical approach use intuition, recollection, and experience. Intuition is information a person knows about whatever is being observed and uses that in coming up with solutions to problems. Recollection and experience deals with previous instances involving the person or something the person viewed that will help them to answer the question. Since every person is different and these three areas will vary from person to person, the philosophical approach and answers or conclusions reached will be different. While it is different from the scientific approach, both are useful in different situations, and at times can be combined into one single approach to be the most effective. .
