For instance, when Inspector Gadget gets a new assignment it always says it will self-destruct. He always reads this notice, but never pays it much attention. He carelessly tosses it behind him, where it explodes on his boss. Inspector Gadget's carelessness teaches children that they should take warnings lightly. They also become confused again about danger, because his boss never gets hurt he just turns black from the smoke. .
I witnessed this first-hand when I babysat two young boys. We watched an episode of the "Ninja Turtles," and then the boys decided they wanted to play. They raced to put on their ninja headbands and pulled out their toy guns, chains and other weapons. They began shooting at each other, trying to "kill the bad guy." I told them to stop because they might hurt each other. They shrugged their shoulders and said they would not hurt for long, because they are tough like Wiley Coyote. They said they wanted to "kill" each other because that is what the turtles did, and the turtles are their heroes.
Cartoons not only cause children to become careless with their actions, but they also confuse real heroes with cartoon characters. Heroes in cartoons are characters such as the Ninja Turtles, the Power Rangers, and Inspector Gadget. These "heroes" kill people, hurt people, and explode things to save the day. The Power Rangers are especially violent heroes. In every episode they kill people or destroy things, and then they are applauded because they "saved the day." These are not only children's heroes, they are children's role models. These role models are teaching children that if they kill people or hurt people, then they will become heroes. True heroes do not participate in these actions to "save the day." .
True heroes are the firefighters and rescue workers in New York City who saved thousands of people on September 11. Real heroes show selfless acts of bravery and kindness. A hero can be as simple as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity or a brave as a fire fighter that rushes in and out of burning buildings saving children and adults.
