Huck Finn Journal CH 29-43

Despite this fact, eventually Huck states, " I"ll go to Hell" and decides that he will try and save Jim.
             Chapter 32.
Huck finds the Phelp's house which is where he was told Jim is. Silas Phelp's comes out of the house and asks Huckleberry if he is Tom. Seeing he can take advantage of the situation Huck uses quick thinking(a valuable trait he utilizes throughout the novel) and pretends to be Tom. Eventually he figures out that the Tom he is pretending to be is actually his best friend Tom Sawyer. In order to update Tom on the situation, Huckleberry goes down to the river when he hears a steamboat so he can tell Tom what has happened.
             Chapter 33.
Huck meets up with Tom and tells him everything that has happened. He even asks Tom if he will help him attempt to free Jim and Tom agrees. Tom's agreeing to help Jim greatly shocks Huck. "Tom Sawyer fell considerable in my estimation" is what Huck says because he didn't think Tom would be willing to try and free a slave. When at the Phelp's house, Tom tells them that he is William Thompson from Ohio. Later that night, the two friends sneak out to try and find Jim. When outside, they see the Duke and Dauphin finally get tarred and feathered for a con they tried to pull. This shows Huck that bad deeds will not go unpunished forever.
             Chapter 34.
The differences between Huck and Tom are greatly emphasized in this chapter through the differences in their plans to rescue Jim. Huck, who is a very realistic person, comes up with a basic plan that should work to free Jim. Tom, who has read many fiction stories, however, says Hucks plan is way too simple. He then comes up with a very dangerous complex plan which is much more adventurous but so risky it could get all three of them killed. The differences in character between Huck and Tom are caused by the different sorroundings they grew up in. Because Tom grew up in a richer sheltered environment with books he is more about fun and games and doesn't even think about what could actually happen to them.
