             1. 1607- Cheiftain Powhatan had loose control over neighboring Indian tribes. He accepted the English settlers as possible allies. However, relations grew tense when the settlers began raiding Indian food supplies. .
             2. 1610- Relations were even more strained when Lord De La Warr arrived. He destroyed Indian towns, until a peace settlement ended the First Anglo-Powhatan War in 1614, sealed by a marriage between Pocahontas to colonist John Rolfe. .
             3. A weak peace lasted for 8 years until the Indians struck back after settlers continued to press inland. 347 settlers were killed, including John Rolfe. Virginia Company declared war in the Indians. Indians were driven westward. .
             4. 1644- Second Anglo-Powhatan War, Indians were again defeated. The resulting peace treaty banished the natives from their ancestral lands-the origins of the later reservation system. .
             5. Chesapeake Indians were nearly extinct. Disease, disorganization and disposability caused their defeat. Colonists had no use for the Indians. Colonists wanted Indian land. .
             F. The Indians" New World .
             1. Other Native Americans were forced out of their ancestral lands. European colonization influenced their way of life, bringing horses into the Indian culture. The Sioux became nomadic hunters in the Great Plains. Indians in general were pushed westward. .
             2. Indian way of life was most seriously disrupted by European diseases. Since knowledge was passed down from the elders, Indian history was wiped out as many Indians perished. Clan ties, tribal alliances; everything was disrupted. The surviving bands of Indians scrambled to form new tribes, forced to reinvent themselves. .
             3. Trading industries also changed as the demand for European firearms increased. Indians fought amongst themselves for access to the prime hunting grounds.
