Napoleon


His rise in the army came about through the revolution and the egalitarian ideals in the army. He was the personification of the idea that all careers were open to anyone with the talent to undertake them and the prospects for social advancement that came along with the revolution. Because of this, he was a strong supporter of equality. Napoleon first got a taste of power under the Jacobins as a commander in the recapturing of Toulon. Even under the directory he was a loyal general who helped quell a royalist revolt. These events, particularly his association with the Jacobins played a large role in shaping Napoleon's future. In it he saw a government with energy and a great deal of authority as well as a government that could promise careers to people with talents. This would play a large role in formulating Napoleon's reforms such as the Legion of Honour and his authoritarian style of government. While Napoleon was critical of the bourgeoisie he had a deeper hatred of the aristocracy and the old fashioned views they represented.
             Another great change in Napoleons views of the French Revolution came while he was campaigning in Italy. After conquering the peninsula he placed himself in the position of supreme power. He introduced a French-style constitution and sold off the property of the church, as expected of a revolutionary Frenchman. Napoleon's treatment of Italy was a foreshadowing of how he would treat future conquered nations. It was also another sign of how he would govern France in the near future when he came to power there. His Italian campaign also contributed to his glory and his myth among the French people. He was a product of the revolution and this made him a hero to the French people. He was hailed with a great amount acclaim upon his return to France and always had the support of the majority throughout his reign.
             Throughout all this, Napoleon had gained a personal opinion of how France should be governed.
