rose for emily

"A Rose for Emily" is a short story by William Faulkner revolving around the main character, Miss Emily Grierson. The story starts off with Emily being dead. Then Faulkner begins to tell about Emily when she was alive. Emily's father's death took its toll on her. Her father had lent money to the town where they lived and in return, he was not charged taxes as way of repayment. Miss Emily believed that tax break applied to her too and refused to pay taxes. She caught interest in a day-laborer, Homer Barron. When he left for a few days and returned, he was never seen again. The townsfolk started rumoring that Miss Emily killed him. When she passed away, her family came to pay their respects and went into one in her house that has been closed for some time now. Inside they found Homer lying on the bed, dead. Obviously, Emily has several problems that show she is an unhappy person.
Emily shows her unhappiness one way by acting senile. She acts as if dead people are still alive. When the Aldermen came to her house to discuss her paying taxes, she would tell them "see Colonel Sartoris" (Faulkner 131). The downside to her statement is that Colonel Sartoris has been dead almost ten years. Maybe no one told her that he has been dead, but that is hard to believe. When her father passed on to the afterlife Emily told the ladies, which came to her house to give her their condolences, that her father was not dead. She done this for three days, until she was finally convinced to let the doctors dispose of her father's body, which they did quickly. She just could not grasp the fact that her father was gone and he was not coming back. The most ludicrous act that Emily did was when she had her male acquaintances, Homer Barron, dead body laying on a bed in one of the rooms in her house. This was the only way that she could have the man she loved. After Emily's death, some of her family came to her house to pay their respects.
