History of Apartheid

As defined in the Webster dictionary, apartheid is a system of racial segregation peculiar to the Republic of South Africa, the legal basis of which they largely repealed in 1991 to 1992. The apartheid began when Daniel F. Malan was elected into the government in 1948, and he put the apartheid into play. This changed many lives, not only for blacks, but for whites. It not only segregated black people from white people, but it separated black people from each other. Many laws were put established, lives were affected and through it all one person stood above all and excelled in bringing freedom to his people.
With the apartheid being put into force in 1948, racial discrimination laws came about. This included the law that whites could not marry nonwhites. Therefore, the law is forbidding two people to marry if they are of opposite color. While another law was put into play that stated that there were some jobs that were only "white jobs", this stopped black people with the same education from working with white people. It was also known that the white people got better jobs then blacks. In 1950, the Population Registration Act required all South Africans to be classified into one of three categories. They were racially classified as white, black(African) or colored(mixed). The Department of Home affairs was responsible for categorizing the people of South Africa. It was based on the appearance, social acceptance and decent. It was required that all blacks carried a "pass book". The "pass book" included fingerprints, photo and information on access to non-black areas. White people obviously were granted more privileges than the black, and were treated with more respect. Only the Africans had to go by the unjust laws, and face harsh punishment if they laws were to be broken. Not only were the Africans social lives affected but they were forced to leave their own homes and move to reserves established by the government.
