Persian Wars


            
             Hello, we did our project on the Persian Wars. The Persians sent ambassadors to Greece to ask if they would surrender. The Greeks didn't surrender, but threw the ambassadors into pits and wells. For that reason the Persian fleet landed at Marathon. The Athenians had to fight the Persians alone and out numbered, because no other city-states could reach them in time. .
             MARATHON.
             On September 12, 490 B.C. the Athenians attacked the Persians. The Persians retreated. The Persians lost over 6,000 people. Militates, an Athenian General, sent messages with news of the victory. The grave where the dead Athenians were buried can still be seen today. That was the conclusion of the First Persian War.

             THE SECOND PERSIAN WAR.
             Seeking revenge Xerxes decided to attack Greece. He made two boat bridges at Hellespoint, so the Persian army could get across to Greece. The Persians attacked the Spartan army. After a few days of fighting, the Persians killed all of the 300 Spartans soldiers. .
             The Athenians evacuated their women and children to a nearby island. When the Persians got to Athens they found the city deserted and then burned the city. The Persian fleet then attacked the Greek fleet. Then they retreated. The Athenian fleet surrounded the Persian fleet at the straight of Salamis. The Persian fleet lost half of their ships. A year after their victory the Greeks kicked the Persians out of Greece. That was the end of the Persian Wars.
             GREECE & WAR.
             War was a normal part of Greek life. The best Greek soldiers were hoplites. They had shin guards, helmets, Shields, and body armour. Their weapons were swords and long spears. Only rich men could be hoplites because only they could afford the armour. The Greeks also had archers. We hope you learned something you didn't know. .
             WAR WEAPONRY.
             They used swords, spears, and bows. Today we use semiautomatic rifles, pistols, and machine guns. They used chariots and horses. Now we use tanks, airplanes, and guided missiles.
