computer animation

The first animated film came about in 1906 with J. Stuart Blackton's, Humorous Phases on Funny Faces. Also, in 1926, the first feature-length animated film, Prince Achmed was produced by Lotte Reiniger. However, Walt Disney was, of course, the over-powering force in the history of animation. Disney pioneered the use of sound and color in animation. This was first seen apparent in 1928 when Disney created the first ever cartoon with synchronized sound. The cartoon was none other than, Mickey Mouse. Now-a-days it takes the average big screen cartoons about four to six years to be developed and produced.
Computer animation can be classified as either high tech or low cost. Meaning, high level techniques or low level techniques. His level techniques are usually algorithms or models used to generate a motion using a set of rules or constraints. Where as low level techniques consist of techniques such as shape interpolation algorithms, also known as in-betweening. When using low level techniques the animator usually has a fairly specific idea of the exact motion he or she wants. An example of a low level technique includes the flip book which was popular in the 1800's.
Motion capture systems are another way to produce animations. "Motion capture systems allow the movement of real actors to be translated to digital characters on a computer screen" (Kaufman 24+). Producing believable movement from digital characters in real time is much easier with the usage of motion capture systems.
Another technique of animation is that of computer generated images. The intentions of such images are to enhance, create and assist films to convince the viewer of the reality of the images they are being presented with. "To bring to life, in the literal sense, to animate" (Canemaker 72). .
"Through the years, animation has combined graphics and sculptures with pantomime, dance, music, acting, puppetry and the written word, and meshed them all with the mechanics and electronics of motion picture and sound production technologies" (Canemaker 72).
