Domestic Violence

The violence may not happen often but it remains as a constant terrorizing factor.
When women try to leave many return again and again to suffer the same fate at the hands of violent spouses or boyfriends. A man that beats a woman will do it again. And again. And again. Study after study shows that the abuse if anything will worsen. The average battered woman will leave her abuser on average of eight times before walking out for good. That means those who work closely with victims, ranging from police to court personnel must understand the cycle of violence and be prepared to see the same woman repeatedly. I don't believe the victim who is struck for the first time calls the police, because the man is the most apologetic and he claims it will never happen again. The question to be asked is how many times does it have to happen before the police are called. These women are not defendants they are victims looking for help. Most of these women have never been to court before in their lives. For them to come in to court is very difficult and intimidating.
Many victims return wanting to believe the abuser will change, and drop the charges. They"ll be best friends one day and worse enemies the next. If women want to prevent domestic violence they should get a restraining order. Orders issued in a domestic violence case may include that the restrained person shall immediately move from the residence shared with the protected person. Other people such as children and other family members who reside in the same residence, may be included with the protected person so as to reduce the potential for harm by the restrained person.
In a national survey of 6000 american families, fifty percent of the men who frequently assaulted their wives also frequently abused their children. Child abuse is fifteen times more likely to occur in families where domestic violence is present. Men who have witnessed their parents domestic violence are more likely to abuse their wives and children than children of non-violent parents.
