The problem with having these three men write up the majority of the treaty is that thay all have such different views and aims. Clemenceau totally blamed Germany for the war, he wanted revenge and the only thing that would do it for him was a totally crippled Germany. Wilson was mostly interested in his fourteen points, as well as forming a League of Nations, he was prepared to give up ground on any issue as long as he got his two goals. . Lloyd George's attitude was more of a compromise between the two other gentleman. He wants justice and punishment more then he wants revenge and a crippled Germany. Lloyd George wants to protect the British Empire, but most importantly their large colonial system, and their trade routes. Plus create a new trading partner, which Britain was always in the market for. The only thing these three countries had in common is that they all were looking out for their own best interests. France wanted to feel safe from a German attack, Britain wanted to rule the seas again with her navy, and the U.S. wanted to keep Britian and Frnace in line. All of the othe smaller Allied countries wanted more land or more people, mostly wanting a piece of the spoils.(2).
The meeting where they decided on the terms of the Treaty of Versailles as well as many other items was called the Paris Peace Conference. It was held in Paris because that is where most of the fighting and devistation took place. Georges Clemenceau demanded that it be held in Paris, and noone could disagree with him. The main problem with having the conference in France is that it seemed as if the conference was about triumph and revenge, as opposed to the true nature of the peace treaty, which is the search for justice. Also Clemenceau could dominate the discussions with the home point advantage and he wanted Germany totally brought to its knees.
The Paris Peace Conference began January 18th and lasted five months .
