How is the employment interview conducted in the United States, and what is expected of an interviewee? As an international student, I am aware of the big challenge that will come after I graduate from college. I know there are tons of opportunities waiting for us to explore, and all we need to do, is to prepare ourselves as we are ready to seek employment in the United States. By watching the video, The Employment Interview: American Style, which it focuses on assisting international students with the U.S. interviewing process and style, I learned what an American interview is and what we are expected to do before, during, and after an interview.
The video geared toward those students not familiar with interviewing procedures in the United States. Some issues include: traditional interview questions, and why they are asked and suggestions on how to answer them. Since the presentation of the video directed at International students, the video addresses appropriate communication styles for job interviews in the United States. There are demonstrations of how the student's can open up discussion with a potential employer on ways to hire an international student; the critical stages of an interview; what needs to be done before the interview (appearance and physical presence is discussed in detail); visually present the impact of contrasting cultural values; employment interviews are communication encounters containing cultural norms and rules that required specific cultural literacy. In an American interview, we will be expected to convey confidence in ourselves and our abilities; to engage in small talk at the beginning of the interview; to speak directly; to talk about ourselves, emphasizing our strengths and taking credit for our accomplishments; and to offer examples that illustrate our knowledge and skills. In our class, we learned how to put together a resume utilizing our current qualifications at the beginning of this semester.
