Some research states that alterations in neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin, are accompanied by a greater tendency for suicidal behaviour. Reduced levels of this chemical have been discovered in post-mortems of individuals that have turned to suicide as a solution. In the brain, there are natural antidepressants present, such as norepinephrine and serotonin. An imbalance of these chemicals could lead to depression, which in turn, could result in suicide. Also, if there is a physical or psychological threat, the HPA-axis (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) increases production of a chemical called corrosion which is produced to fight off stress and anxiety. External sociological forces combine with negative psychological conflict can cause stress at a level high enough to activate the HPA-system. Studies show that an overactive HPA-system can lead to depression. Biochemists place importance of ones genetics on suicidal behaviour, but it has been proved that suicide is not genetically predisposed. Depression, however can be found in one's genetic make up which could lead to extreme behaviour. Also, suicide in ones direct social life (family, friends, co-workers, etc.) could establish a fatal model for repetitious behaviour. Biological predisposition and chemical imbalance can lead to such destructive behaviour as suicide. .
One's psychological well being as well as perception of everyday situations are argued to be main causes of suicidal behaviour. Mental illnesses, depression and substance abuse often cross paths with suicidal behaviour, but are not the only causes of it. Suicide is the result of years of built up emotion such as hopelessness, guilt, sorrow, loneliness, fear, etc. Suicide is a personal reaction to these emotions, which is thus not .
