Instructional Technology

Keeping students and faculty on the "cutting edge" of the electronic teaching revolution is an expensive proposition." (Grasha, 2000) Schools have limited budgets, and if a school is able to update technology often, then they are truly lucky. But with most schools a flexible budget is just a dream. Another problem that is drawn from the costly nature of technology is that it would widen the gap between the rich and poor even larger in terms of schooling.
In addition to being disadvantageous in terms of expenses and obsoleteness, the largest problem in incorporating technology into the curriculum is that the educators currently in the teaching profession, and those entering the profession lack experience with current technology. Those entering the teaching profession are not receiving the proper education to use technology in the classroom. Di states that, "Compared to the pace of the technology development and the needs in the public and private schools, the current instructional technology programs housed in colleges of education have been playing "catch up"."(Di, 2000) Technology changes at such a rapid pace that it is impossible to stay current with the technology itself, but it also becomes impossible to educate future teachers on how to use the technology and include it in teaching.
But despite all the tribulations that technology in a school may cause, the benefits of integrating technology into the everyday curriculum far outweigh the negatives. Learning styles vary from child to child, and although a teacher may be reaching ninety nine percent of the audience, by incorporating technology into the curriculum, the other one percent may be reached. In every class there are students who act up, or pay less attention to the typical teacher centered lesson, who just need another type of stimulation. One example of how technology helps students is through Microsoft PowerPoint.
