Christopher also believed that the journey would make new allies for Spain or any other nation that decided to sponsor him. Christopher Columbus also had an yearning for knowledge. He believed that if the voyage was successful that the new found knowledge of the world would bring glory to Spain. A major reason would be for the gain of wealth and honor for himself and his supports. All of these reasons added towards his drive to explore, but his main reason of travelling to the new world was to find a new, faster way to Asia.
When Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas he had no idea that there was actually a continent. Christopher was merely trying to find an easier way to get from Spain to the Eastern Asian countries. When he reached land he believed that he had landed in Asia. Why did Christopher go to his dying bed thinking that he had reached Asia? Christopher believed that Cuba was Japan, and that Haiti and the Dominican Republic were the major island of the Philippians. Columbus had both Hispaniola and Cuba explored a great deal. They measured the area to their best of their ability and the amounts they calculated (although they were quit inaccurate) were close enough to the measurements of Japan, and the major island of the Philippians. Another reason Columbus could have thought he made it to Asia was that the natives of the islands he originally landed on had a yellowish brown coloured skin, quite like the colour of natives from areas in Asia, such as the Philippians. When he arrived in the new world he saw much of the same plant life that was found in Asia. Also, Columbus and his crew saw huge lizards and snakes. These types of creatures had also been seen in Asia. Columbus also said when he returned to Spain, to the King and Queen, "The flocks of parrots obscure the sun." To the Europeans parrots symbolised the Indies. Columbus also had a deep seeded belief that he was a missionary to Asia.
