Essay 1

Technology in society today is constantly advancing. One of the single most commonly used tools in today's society is the computer. It links the entire world together with a click of a mouse, stores vital information, and keeps important records for large businesses. The computer is an important thing and is something that most everyone should know how to use, but sadly that is not the case. Computer illiteracy is a serious issue and must be addressed, otherwise a new group of illiterates will form.
Computers today are a form of communication. In the future if some people are not able to communicate through the computer, they will not be able to flourish in society. Most, decent, well paying jobs will require individuals to operate a computer and without basic computer skills they would not be able to perform their job.
It is a fact that many people refuse to learn how to use a computer. Whether it be because they are confused by them or other reasons, certain individuals are only hurting themselves by not learning how to use computers. Computers are becoming easier and easier to use and soon there will be no reason for these people to refuse how to use them.
In Kozol"z The Human Cost Of An Illiterate Society (1985) he covers the issue of illiteracy in reading. His theories can build upon the illiteracy of computers. Computers encompass and build upon traditional literacy. If a person cannot read, then they cannot use a computer and once again they are of very little use to society.
In the near future computers are going to be a main source of communication. They may even replace the telephone and knowing how to use a computer will be an absolute necessity. In order to flourish in society individuals in the future will have to know how to perform basic computer skills.
