Racism plays a major theme in the novels "To Kill A Mocking Bird, and "A Time to Kill". This is evident by many occurrences. In "To Kill a Mockingbird", they wrongfully accused Tom Robinson of attacking Mayella Ewell, and in "A Time to Kill" the Ku Klux Klan involvement in the Carl Lee murder case.

During the time period when To Kill a Mockingbird is set, blacks were not considered equal to whites, this caused maybe crimes to be blamed on them. This is apparent went Nathan Radley hears someone in a cabbage patch. He opens fire and when people ask what happened, without he thought he says it was a "nigger", and he didn't even know who it was. To be associated with blacks during this time was just as bad as being one yourself. This is evident based on the main storyline of Tom Robinson being accused of rape. Atticus is criticized for defending Tom in court. An example is when Mrs. Dubose said, "Your father is no better than the niggers and trash he works for." He is also called a "nigger lover".
