Often what shapes our perception and, level of satisfaction and contentment is our tendency to compare. When our salary seems to jump a substantial amount, we think we are better off and we feel happy. But after some time that doesn't seem to be enough and sooner or later our overall level of happiness tends to migrate back to what it was before we received the pay raise. Now we feel like we are not making enough and begin to want to become wealthier. In this materialistic world, wealth and happiness seem to go hand in hand. Fancy cars and extravagant houses do not make a man happy, instead its human warmth and compassion that leads a man to happiness.
"Genuine compassion is based on the rationale that all human beings have an innate desire to be happy and overcome suffering" states the Dalai Lama, and that positive interaction is a necessity to our everyday lives. It is shown through research that random acts of kindness by others boost one's outlook for the rest of the day. So if I were to help a woman with her flat tire, she would be more inclined to help someone else in need. Not only do "actions of kindness build a person's morale, but that compassion is also crucial for one to be happy" (118). This higher morale puts people into a positive state of mind and it can actually improve their physical health. In addition to the beneficial effects on one's physical health "there is evidence that caring behavior contributes to good emotional health" (126). Studies show that reaching out to people can induce a feeling of happiness and less depression. Continuous acts kindness and compassion and adopting an altruistic lifestyle will ultimately bring a person to happiness. .
