            Germany has more festivals than any other country in Europe. In winter, the main celebration is Christmas. This is celebrated all over the country, with houses and streets decorated. On 5th December, St. Nicholas" day, it is customary for children to leave their shoe filled with sweets outside their door. There are beer festivals in many parts of the country at the end of summer. The Oktoberfest beer festival is held in Munich every year in September and is the biggest beer festival in the world. Carnival, which takes place in February or March, marks the end of winter and the start of Lent. It is a time of parties and colorful fancy-dress street parades. In summer, hardly a week passes without a special festival in some part of Germany, usually for religious, historical or Cultural reasons. Every ten years a Passion play, about the death of Christ is put on for a month in Obberammergau, in Bavaria. In lower Saxony, the town of Hameln remembers the Pied Piper legend from the m!.
