Gray Wolf

            
             The most commonly used name is the Gray Wolf, while the more scientific name is the Canis Lupus. The wolves are known to extremely smart and adaptive. The Native Americans tried to learn from the way the wolves lived and adapted off the land and its resources. Wolves are right behind humans in the ability to adapt to their environment. They can live in virtually any climate ranging from deserts to frozen tundra's to deciduous forests. Knowing all of this it is hard to imagine how this species could be endangered. Unfortunately for the wolves, they were hunted heavily in the early 20th century because people believed that they were responsible for most of their livestock losses. By 1973 they were put on the endangered species list because the lower 48 states had very few if any wolves at all. .
             The gray wolf is a mammal in the Canidae family. They are also part of the Holarctic historic range. These wolves have gray and white pointed hair and long pointed ears. They way approximately 150lbs and have very sharp canine like teeth. These wolves are stay in the den for the first six weeks. During this time they are fed fragments of meat brought to them by their parents. After 1 or 2 years the wolf is big enough to leave the den and try to find a mate. They have been known to travel nearly 500 miles in search of a new den or new mate. .
             Humans are what threaten the gray wolf. Many times owners of large livestock farms tend to kill many wolves that try to eat their livestock. In 1965 there were bounty programs that had $20-$50 rewards for each wolf. As a result people did almost anything to kill these wolves and ended up killing eagles, ravens, foxes, bears, etc. These other animals were killed because carcasses were sprayed with poisons and anything that fed on the carcasses was poisoned to death. .
             Just recently the population of the wolves has increased to a healthy level. The reason for this was because they have been on the Endangered Species Act since 1973.
