It's a classical scare tactic - making the end seem so scary and so horrible that the first step should never be taken. .
The conservative court stated, "Gay men and lesbians, are no longer strangers in America. They are citizens, entitled, like everyone else, to equal protection "no special rights, but simple equality-(Sullivan 354). Since ninety percent of the population already have the right to marry the informed, consenting adult of their choice, and would even consider that right a fundamental, constitutionally protected right, since when does extending it to the remaining ten percent make it a "special" right? The problem with all that special rights talk is that it proceeds from that very assumption, that because of all the civil rights laws in this country, everyone is already equal, so therefore any rights gay people are being granted must therefore be special. That is most assuredly not the case, especially regarding marriage and all the legal protections that go along with it. Only two states allow gay marriages in the United States. That is a fact which proves that equality does not exist and that many laws should be turned around to accommodate the neglected by law citizens of the United States of America. .
Most of my life I lived in Maryland. And most of my life I lived next door to a gay couple. Miguel and Tom lived next door, and baby-sat me often when I was little. They were two of the nicest people I've ever met, and when I was old enough to understand that they were homosexuals, it really didn't change anything in the way I felt about them. Miguel and Tom wanted to get married for years, but since Maryland laws do not allow same sex marriage, my dear neighbors moved to California. A couple of months after they left, I received wedding pictures. It's not fair that homosexuals have to live in a certain place to be married. That reminds me of reservations for Indians - discriminatory and unjust.
