Just Say Yes

For years now people have been told to say no to drugs, because drugs are bad, people that use drugs are the slugs of society, and it is simply wrong to do drugs. What if this theory was reevaluated? What if drugs, in particular marijuana, weren't t an illegal part of society? The United States has taken steps to stop the use of drugs by making them illegal and enforcing this law greatly, but perhaps it is time for a new system. Since it has never been tried, it is difficult to predict the results, but steps could be taken to make it successful. Marijuana, the most common illegal drug, should be legalized because it would allow society the freedom to use, it would end the war on drugs as well as drug-related crimes, and it would benefit the government of the United States of America as well as the nation itself.
Legalizing drugs has been debated in society for a while now. The government has placed restrictions on people's decision to use drugs, other than alcohol and tobacco, and they enforce it by filling prisons with non-violent drug users. Congress hoped that by doing this drugs would simply fade away, but millions of people still use drugs and drug-related crimes and killings continue to rise in major cities (Bender 16). It is clear that making drugs illegal has had no positive benefits in the United States for either the government or for the people. Since making drugs illegal has not been beneficial for many, then perhaps making them legal would have positive effects and give the nation more authority over their personal decisions.
Making drugs illegal has limited the freedom of society and their right to choose. The United Sates continues to preach freedom in other parts of the world, but it fails to respect the privacy of its own citizens (Marshall 80). Criminal sanctions against drug use is limiting the right for adults to make their own decisions to use substances no more dangerous than others now available legally.
