On June 25, 1979, a horrible murder was committed. A woman, Susan Reinert, was found naked and in fetal position in the back of her hatch back in a motel parking lot in the state of Pennsylvania. Susan Reinert, a teacher from Upper Merion High School and a divorced mother of two had been murdered but her children Michael and Karen were missing. This crime lead to one of the largest homicide investigations and missing person searches America had ever seen. Still to this day Susan Reinert's children are still missing and presumed dead.
There were two main suspects in the case, Dr. Jay Smith and William Bradfield. Smith was a retired Lieutenant Colonel and principal of the Upper Merion High School. Bradfield was also a teacher at Upper Merion High School. Smith ran his school as if it were a boot camp and would wear his Military uniform to the school on a regular basis. Bradfield was a control freak and a womanizer who got his kicks from controlling those who had low self esteem. .
Of these two suspects, many people say it was one or the other. I believe both Smith and Bradfield had worked together to commit this atrocity. The reason I say this is because evidence and the times presented do not line up. Though there were many errors with the collection and custody of evidence, I still feel the evidence brought to light was sufficient enough to have brought those two to prison. .
Bradfield was trying to double cross Smith. Together they had planned the perfect crime. Even though they could have both gotten away without repercussions, Bradfield did not want any blame at all on him and planted evidence against Smith. .
What first made me think that they were conspiring about something was when Dr. Smith was on trial for the robberies of the department stores. It seems very unreasonable that someone would risk getting caught lying in court and be convicted of perjury to save someone who they claimed they really didn't like.
