Rational Disadvantages Of The Ten-hour Workday

            The employers should be able to control the number of their workers hours. Labourer should be free to decide for him- or herself how long they want to work, and if they are not happy with the conditions of their workplace they can always go to another employer. The government should not step in and limit the free forces of the labour market, but instead maintain a clear laissez faire approach. .
             Further working only ten-hours per day will not be enough for a continuous economic growth that in the long run would be favourable for all parties. Higher productivity per labouring hour will be required for the limitation, which is most likely not possible. Higher investment in machinery, since the machines will be used less, results in a higher capital cost per hour, leading to a worse international competition of important British export goods. Finally and most important the salary of the employees would be lowered, already at the time always being on the edge to total poverty.
             One may claim that working only ten-hours would be more efficient, but if children start to work early enough they will be toughened and thereby be able to perform excellently for twelve or even fourteen hours a day. Suddenly shortening the time of labour would also convey a gargantuan social change that would create problems since the society of labourer is not adapted for leisure time, which would anyway probably be used for drinking and criminal acts. Short-term suffering is an unavoidable part of the human advance. The ones that fight for the ten-hour workday base their thoughts on emotions and ignorance instead of economic calculations and theories.
