The Big 5 Of Psychology

Pavlov measured the relationship between increases in stimulation and increases in response. Beginning at low level of stimulation, as Pavlov increased stimulation the dogs exhibited increases in associated responses. Eventually a point would be reached in which further increases in stimulation would lead to what seemed to be paradoxical decreases in responding, as if the dog's body were beginning to shut down in response to stimulation levels that were to high. This point is called threshold of transmarginal inhibition. Pavlov noticed that different dogs had a different tolerance to how much stimulation they could stand. Those that could take a lot of stimulation had a strong nervous system, and those who could not stand as much stimulation were said to have a weak nervous system. Put simply, the dogs with strong nervous systems could "take more" stimulation before they eventually found it to aversive, leading to inhibition. By contrast, the dogs with the weak nervous system could take less and began to experience inhibition a lot sooner than the other dogs (McAdams 316). The above experiment is a long-winded way of relating these dogs with introverts and extraverts. Extraverts take punishments better than introverts and are more inclined to do whatever got them in trouble over again. On the other hand an introvert is more inclined to not do the same behavior again. Maybe the above experiment with dogs is suggesting that introverts have a low tolerance rate for stimulation (punishment) and extraverts can stand a little bit more than. A prime example is when Takes Enemy got into a wreck with his friends after drinking, he promised himself that he was not going to drink anymore, yet he went back on that decree and drank again. The article stated that when Jonathan first came onto the scene that he was shy. I do not believe that is totally true. He may have seemed shy to outsiders, but he could not have been extremely shy for he was the best basketball player in his reservation.
