The Reflection

The job required that she travel with Alan (Patricia's husband at the time) everyday to his job-site and do whatever he needed. About two months later, Alan began getting drunk and mysteriously disappearing with Susie when he was supposed to be at work. The subsequent confrontations and heated discussions led to Alan losing a long sought after partnership in the company and a very nasty divorce between Patricia and Alan. Within a couple of weeks, Susie needed more help and a shoulder to cry on. Patricia forgave her immediately and helped her. .
             When I incredulously demanded why she even cared, she stated "Susie has made a lot of mistakes and just needs someone to love her -. I remember feeling maddening frustration at what I considered to be her nave stupidity. "Don't you see how she is using you? I hate that filthy whore!- I yelled. "Jeffrey-, she replied. " I remember when you weren't so selfish. I thought your aunt Susie was always good to you and that you loved her. I wonder if you would forgive me if I made a mistake. Or would you hate me too?- I felt the searing heat of blood reddened shame rush to my face as I turned away to hide the sudden tears in my eyes. She was such a loving person! Strangely, I felt much more remorse and guilt over Patricia's disappointment in me than even my hatred for those who hurt her. I have never completely forgiven Susie. I do remain civil out of respect for Patricia and because I too have made mistakes for which I am sorry. .
             I could recount many similar instances that occurred throughout the years I spent with her. In every circumstance she selflessly eased someone's pain. Even as a boy I could see her demonstrating unconditional love by perceiving whom the person really was, what they needed and then giving to them what she could despite any personal sacrifice. How cheap and hollow her words would have been to a little boy had it not been for her consistent action.
