The School For Scandal

In this play we find a truly sordid cast of characters. The entire play is based upon the deception of others, all in the name of fashionable congress. The characters lie to each other for amusement, and they constantly seek to belittle their peers. An innocent country girl is thrust into this scene, and, due to her beauty and simplicity, is taken by the devilishness of the affairs that confront her. Of course, there are more than enough willing participants to corrupt her. One is constantly left wondering if she will ever be able to return to herself and the values that once made her so charming.
In the beginning it would seem that Lady Teazle has already been a bit corrupted by those who surround her. They seem to seek her out for her innocence, and she is made fun of for not reveling in scandal like the others do.
Eventually Lady Teazle comes to find herself in a world of scandal. She is not truly acting in the manner of her friends, but she pretends to in order to fit in. Still, one might say at this point in the play that she has been corrupted.
It is not until the accident which exposes her that Lady Teazle realizes that she is not cut out for this lifestyle. She once again finds her true self and wishes to be part of her husbands life. She decides she loves only Sir Peter.
We can take confort in the ending of this play. It would appear that both our hero and heroine and quite content with their decisions, and that they will be able to exist happily and fully dedicated to one another.
