The Trip Of A Lifetime

It was a warm August morning I was headed to the Greyhound Bus Terminal with the rest of the gang. I was headed on my way to my first missionary trip to Mexico. Thoughts of nice sunny weather, clear beaches and of course shopping were on my mind. Oh, and yes we were going to help a small church build a bathroom and do a vacation bible school for the town children. This was just the beginning of a week full of life changing events.
This was my first trip on the good old Greyhound Bus. The seats were compacted, small and cramped. The neighbor in front of you was on your lap if he/she decided to take a rest, which happened often. I was excited at first, the thought of being on the bus for 36 hours did not seem all that bad. The bus was packed, but our group was able to sit together. During our trip on the greyhound, we did some wired things like painting the guys" finger nails pink while they slept. At the various stops along the way we talked with a lot of people, like a man who seriously thought he was God. Although some of them made me feel uncomfortable, it made me think what life is like outside my somewhat sheltered life. Finally, 36 hours later off the Greyhound and at a church in California for a good nights sleep and a good dinner before leaving for Mexico either by van or the OJ Simpson Bronco. I got to ride in the Bronco. .
Across the boarder we go! The first thing I noticed was a big wall and people selling things (everything) on the side of the road. Wow, what an awakening here I am free to come and go as I please, but the people of Mexico have huge high walls to keep them in, like caged animals. There were some very beautiful sites along the way. The ocean was bright blue and we saw a lot of mammoth houses on the cliffs over looking the ocean. Winding along the road we started to see a change in things. It went from rich looking to run down shacks that were not finished and garbage piled up high.
