Why School Uniforms Work

Public school uniforms have always been an issue in schools all over the United Sates. Weather or not the uniforms work the way they are said to be, is the biggest issue. Many public schools have said no to uniforms before ever looking at the facts. Uniforms have helped many public schools all across the United States with multiple problems. School uniforms help students and a school by decreasing pressure from both students and parents, helping students concentrate on their schoolwork, and most importantly decreases violence.
Decreasing peer pressure is a big problem, which can be helped by the addition of uniforms to public schools. Students can sometimes put peer pressure on other students because of the clothes they wear. One example from Memphis Tennessee, says, "There isn't competition, especially in grades 4,5, and 6, over who is wearing what." (www.ed.gov) This comment was released one year after the uniform policy was started. Uniforms, in a sense, make each student equal by making him or her more alike. No ones clothes are any better than anybody else's. A principal from Kansas City, Missouri, says, "After the uniforms policy started, the children began to feel good about themselves." (www.ed.cov) Uniforms can take pressure off parents. Many times they are forced into buying clothes that may be more expensive than they can afford. Families who don't have much money can make one investment on school clothes instead of buying many expensive clothes for their children. One Internet source says, "Uniforms have been a great equalizer for our students. It is also great and cost effective for the parents." (www.ed.gov) Therefore, Public school uniforms can be a great help to both parents and students by taking away peer pressure.
School uniforms have also been proven to increase the student's concentration on their schoolwork. An Internet source says, "About four out of five principals at schools with uniforms believe that the uniforms have had a positive effect in the classroom.
