Behavior Theory

When Johnny does behave correctly, he should be reinforced. Continuous reinforcement will work best but there is a slight problem with this type of reinforcement. The problem with this is that the mother or father might not be around when his good behavior occurs so the desired behavior might stop. .
Punishment is one thing that Johnny's mother and father have tried to correct his unruly behavior but punishment is not necessarily the answer to this problem. Punishment will only teach Johnny what not to do, not guide him to behave in the correct way. By punishing Johnny when his bad behavior occurs may decrease the behavior but can also evoke undesired responses like fear or anger towards the parent. What needs to be done in this type of situation is reinforcement. By reinforcing Johnny, he learns to behave in the correct manner. The types of reinforcements that are suggested for Johnny's behavior are primary and secondary. The primary and secondary reinforcements are basic rewards such as praises or a favorite activity when Johnny behaves in the correct way.
             Parenting Styles .
The style of parenting that is used on Johnny may also be part of the reason for Johnny's unruly behavior. If Johnny's mother and father are using the authoritarian parenting style he may feel that the rules are too strict and are acting out in spite of the parent's demands. His behavior might be rebellious which goes against the rules of the parents. Authoritarian parenting style may cause Johnny to develop self-concept issues. This would make Johnny think and feel low about himself causing anger and depression. Another parenting style that might be affecting Johnny's behavior is the permissive style. If the parenting is not at all demanding with varying acceptance, Johnny may feel that he is not getting the attention that he needs. He may feel that his mother and father do not care and is acting out in a way to get their attention.
