Marino and Lucy suggest that they go to Dr. Scarpetta's home but she says no. Dr. Scarpetta goes into the backyard and finds Detective Roche there. He harasses her and she gets away. She decides to go home and Marino gives her a ride to the morgue. Later on, they go to Ted Eddings' apartment and Agent Bentley Wesley joins them. Dr. Scarpetta and Agent Wesley had an affair and then broke it off and now he is know getting a divorce. At the apartment, they find out that someone broke into his computer and erased his files the same night he was murdered. The files they erased were important information about the New Zionists and weapon-grade plutonium. .
Dr. Scarpetta interviews Eddings' mother and finds out that he had a girlfriend. The doctor goes back to her office, does some work, and goes home. Lucy had been drinking and reading the New Zionists' book. She then gets a call that her assistant, Danny Webster, is dead and her car was found a few blocks away. Danny was found shot in the head. Captain Marino and the doctor go to Danny's body and investigate. They then go to her car and found out that someone had been in the car that night with Danny. They figured he stopped to eat and find out that he left the restaurant alone. Lucy gets her car from Danny's friend and he did not know Danny was dead. The doctor then expresses her suspicions that Detective Roche is some how involved.
Everyone is stunned that Danny has been murdered and Dr. Scarpetta does his autopsy. She gets help from an assistant and found that the bullet did a lot of damage to his brain. Suddenly, the fire alarm goes off and releases a chemical gas. The doctor finds out that the fire alarm went off because someone panicked because of the uranium found in her car. She then proceeds to exchange cars because of too many memories. Dr. Scarpetta investigates and finds out that the local electricity company, Commonwealth Power &Light, uses uranium for their nuclear power plants.
