Being a recent college graduate, I found this article on affirmative action in higher education very informative. It is written by Lee Bollinger, the president of the University of Michigan. The information onpoints? for applicant into college was never quite in the open before, however Bollinger comes straight forward and tells the truth of applications at the University of Michigan.
Bollinger states that universities are looking for many different factors in their applicants, and yes, race and culture are issues. These universitieswill givepoints? for various factors in the selection process in order to ensure fairness? (1). And as stated later, race and ethnicity are included in thepoint system?. .
The problem that many people have had is that could a minority aquire an admission over an applicant with a higher SAT score? Bollinger explains that the academic factors score about 110-150 points, which leaves around 40 points for extracurricular activities, and yes, ethnicity. .
The main point to this article is in the last paragraph. Bollinger states that many college student came from all-white or all-black high schools, and that many students have not been introduced to multiculturalism. College is a place, as Bollinger feels, that should be a situation where students can learn from their peers around them. In the real world, work environments are hardly all-white or all-black areas. They are indeed multiculturalistic and therefor, college is a great place for young adults to grow with other students of different ethnicity's. So Bollinger agrees that race and ethnicity are part of the process in accepting the applicants to the university, but he states that this is not a bad thing, but in the end, a terrific learning area.
