Equality In America

Have we as African-Americans achieved equality in America in the new millennium? The answer is no. This is said because, although there has been great strides of progress made by Black people, we are still not equal in the sense of having an equal playing field. Thirty- three years ago Dr. King had a dream, and if he were still alive he would still be dreaming. The systems of racism, racial injustice, and narrow-mindedness are still around in the new millennium. These systems are disguised now more than ever, but they still exist.
In the new millennium the African-American is still faced with, what I believe will be his life-long nemesis, racism. The practice of racial discrimination, although disguised, is still alive today. If this were not the case, programs such as Affirmative Action would have long been served its purpose and done away with. But the sad reality is that even in the new millennium we still need a governing body to make the playing field somewhat equal for us. I say somewhat equal because the truth is if someone is forced to hire a minority based solely on the fact that they are a minority and not on there ability is tokenism ( i.e. a disguised form of racism). . Henry Price, a friend of mine, believes that we as African Americans in the new millennium we are still fighting the same war we have been fighting, but the weapons and tactics used to belittle us are different. He also said that as long as you have to force the majority, meaning white America, to level the playing field, the field will always be lopsided. Because until everyone on the field is equal, the majority will always have the advantage. Carol Hargroves, the author of Divided Minds feels that the struggle for civil rights is still being fought. In her book she speaks about America being divided in our mind set strictly on the basis of color. With these practices still around how could one logically conclude that we have achieved equality in the new millennium?.
