Ethics

             The Importance of Information Ethics.
In our increasingly complex and technologically-dependent society, many critical issues relevant to information access and usage are misunderstood, overlooked or simply ignored. These issues may involve an individual's privacy vs. the public's "right to know," or they may deal with the extent to which an employer may have access to its employee's medical records, electronic ("email"), personnel or other personal files. In a growing number of cases, decisions concerning information access and usage are placing information practitioners in sensitive and, sometimes, vulnerable positions.
Inherent in the information professionals' very expertise is a measure of "power." This power is rooted in their ability to almost instantly locate access and retrieve information by using resources located, quite literally, at their fingertips. Information professionals, as well as those who rely upon them to provide a wide array of available information to conduct their daily business, must recognize and understand that there are responsibilities associated with this power. Even those who manage to use the information they obtain in a responsible and ethical manner are continually struggling to do so in an "information society" where technology is usually far ahead of the full comprehension of its use.
Advances in technology have dramatically changed the role of technical and scientific workers. In a technologically advanced workplace, technicians work in teams to make decisions which, in more traditional organizations, have been made by senior management. Among the most significant decisions are those having ethical implications. Therefore, technical workers must be aware of the ethical issues associated with their specific technologies and with technical decision-making generally. .
What to do about it? Saying that the problems of computer ethics are like other ethical problem does not solve them, many approaches are possible.
