How Media Causes Violence

The media can largely be blamed for the worldwide increase in violence.
The complex age of elaborate laptops, portable color televisions in every room, and pocket radio the size of a basic calculator have all taken their toll on society. Today the world has a variety of problems. Violence is around the top of the list. A study of population showed homicide rates doubling within the 10 to 15 years after the introduction of television, even though television was introduced at different times in each site examined.
Violence in media is being used widely for entertainment purposes.
In an article published in the New York Times in 1998 it stated, "On average in 1997, one act of serious brutality was found for every 4 minutes of entertainment."" Today violence is a major part of video games, television and popular movies. Unfortunately, its an indisputable fact that violence sells, turn on the television during prime time and right away a number of gruesome programs amasses you from extreme wrestling, cartoon to CNN news. Perhaps the news contributes more than just an insightful knowledge of events; like the tobacco companies 20years ago, the present day television broadcasting companies refuse to consent that violent media can and does have harmful effects on its viewers. The television giants of today like ABC, CBS or NBC continue to aim violent shows, because they make money off of these programs such violent media has the greatest impact on children.
The national association for the education of young children (NAEYC) reports that violence in the media has increased since 1980 and continues to increase. Since the 1950s, more than a 1000 studies have been done on the effects of violence in television and movies. The majority of these studies conclude that children who watch significant amounts of television and movies are more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior both immediately and in their adult year these studies have also pointed to a relationship between media violence and real life crime.
