How Lying Makes A Difference

When we take up lying, as a way of life contact is lost between our own lives and ourselves. The lie, which is usually intended to make a difference and make life much easier, causes us to lose touch with the increasing complexity known as truth. "There is no "the truth,"- truth is not one thing, or even a system. It is an increasing complexity."-Adrienne Rich. By refusing that honesty is necessary, we end up lying to ourselves and lose grasp of the importance or everyday life and inevitably lose faith in our own lives.
Confronting the truth is one of the hardest things for a person to do. In order to be able to do this, one must realize what truth actually means and what consequences it carries with it. That is not always the easiest thing to. That is why it is so much easier to tell a lie. Life is made simpler when we say and tell others what we think they want to hear verses" admitting what we know is right. .
Adrienne Rich addresses this very well. She opened my mind on to how lying really affects your life. I found her comparison of lying and taking sleeping pills very true. When you are asleep you shut off your conscious and begin to go into your unconscious where you do not exactly know what is going on around you. By lying you shut yourself off on what is true. When you continually lie, you lose track of what originally was the truth. .
However, lying and dishonesty are common strategies in today's world. Often I have found myself lying to get out of a conversation or trouble. But even after I lie, I do not feel better, nor do I feel the way I thought I would. I always get this apologetic feeling in my stomach, which reminds me that my dishonesty was not the way I was suppose to handle it. I start to think about how I would feel if the tables where turned and that person was lying to me, then I realize that there was no reason to lie in the first place. If you considered that person to be a friend or acquaintance then you should not have to lie to them.
