Issue On Race

Race is a big issue and debate for many individuals. There are those that believe that race should be forgotten about, however, there are people who believe that race should be a factor in categorizing people. In the two articles titled "When the Government Decides Your Race," by Judy Scales-Trent and "On Race," Psychology by Laura Uba and Karen Huang there are many comparisons and similarities on how these two articles express how the subject is brought about. Both articles have strong points on what race is about and how it was defined in the past and present times. In Scales-Trent's article it expresses more about how the American government categorizes people on which race they should fall under. The government is very indecisive about what categories they should make in order to classify people. In fact, the government has been changing their minds on what categories they should create to classify it's citizens, when in reality the government does not have the vaguest idea on what race is. Whereas, in Uba and Huang's article, the topic on race is moreover on how people classify others by genetic or biological differences. Instead of the government-categorizing people, it is individuals that believe that people are different in personality, intelligence, looks, attitudes towards sex and many other characteristics because of their race. The irony to this is that physical characteristics have little to do with our ethnicity, since everyone's body is forms and functions the same inside, yet only have differences outside. .
The similarities about of these two articles is that both are trying to express that race should not be a huge factor in our country. Categorizing people may just create a hierarchy on which race is on top of others. Also, both articles point out that classifying people on which race they belong to may not be effective; for people have ancestors that are from multicultural backgrounds and may not be able to define what race they really belong to.
