Fiber Benefits

Foods rich in fiber offer many valuable health benefits. In fact, there are five conditions that fiber protects human bodies against: weight control, heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes, and GI health. A high-fiber diet may protect against obesity since foods high in fiber, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, are low in calories and provide a low glycemic effect. Almost all dietary fiber comes from plants, whole fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and bran. High fiber foods tend to be low in fat and added sugars and therefore provide less energy per bite, which in turn grants a feeling of fullness and delays hunger. Fiber is filling because it absorbs water as it moves through the digestive tract. Dieticians recommend using a variety of fiber in a weight-loss plan because it is important to consume soluble and insoluble fibers. Soluble fiber comes from fruits and insoluble fiber comes from whole grains. Insoluble fiber is also known as "roughage" (found in whole grains, vegetables, wheat bran, nuts, and beans) and is not absorbed by the human body. Insoluble fiber is beneficial for aiding digestion and facilitating regularity by adding "bulk", which helps keep other foods moving through the digestive tract.
It is the soluble fiber in foods that offers the heart disease benefit. Soluble fiber foods include oats, beans, lentils, peas, nuts, whole fruits, and vegetables. These high, soluble fiber foods are low in animal fat and cholesterol and high in vegetable proteins and phytochemicals (non-nutrient compounds found in plant-derived foods). All these factors are linked with a lower danger of heart disease. Experts believe that soluble fiber helps lower blood cholesterol by attaching to cholesterol found in the digestive tract and in turn, it traps the cholesterol and is subsequently eliminated from the body naturally. .
Although it is unclear whether the fortification comes from the fiber, the vitamins, or the phytochemicals, it has been stated that a high fiber diet can protect an individual from colon cancer.
